Failing Gmail spam tests (again!)


I know this is a common one, but I've trawled through all the other instances of this issue I can find, and followed all the tips I can see (avoiding URLs in text, avoiding 'click here' for links, avoiding 'white' text etc. etc.) but I'm still tripping the filter.

I'm suspecting that because it's a very 'sales' oriented email, the content itself is always going to be a problem. Would be hugely grateful if anyone can spot anything obvious!

Hi Ian, I just went through the code and have to admit that this is one of those times when Gmail is likely being a little too pedantic. The only thing that really stood out was the fact that it has a bit of sales content, as you mention (ie. RRP £xx ), however there isn't much you can do about this, hey?

My recommendation would be to ensure your sending domain is authenticated. Hopefully this gets it to pass Gmail's muster.

From a coding perspective, make sure you add alt text to your images and change your charset to UTF-8, ie.

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />

Just a question about emails getting spam filtered: does that filtering count towards the "Marked as spam" count for a campaign? Or is that only when a recipient explicitly marks an email as spam? I'm slightly concerned because the list that email is going to is about 17,000 and around 10% are gmail or googlemail addresses :( I don't want to blow my account up!

Hey again, you'll be glad to know that the recipient has to manually mark your message as spam for it to count towards your spam %. So if your newsletter is legit, then you shouldn't have anything to worry about here.
