Our site has a caching mechanism that uses the page name in combination with all request variables to give a name to a cache file. Because there are so many Analytics variables sent with links from emails and the passed values are so long, the length of the filename becomes longer than allowed by the operating system. This means no cache for the targeted page as a result and possibly even a server crash when a large campaign is sent out.
It's not easy to change the caching system so the question is:
Is it possible to control what is put in the Analytics variables? The medium and campaign descriptions could be a lot shorter for our campaigns, for medium "email" would be enough for example and utm_term could be removed altogether. Also, couldn't utm_content be a lot shorter or removed in a lot of cases? We do need Analytics so disabling tracking is not an option...
Hi Mark, this is a fairly unique scenario here - thanks for bringing it to our attention. It isn't possible to control what's in Analytics variables, however I've added your vote for tag customization internally and brought it up with our devs, in case there's something they can suggest we do in the immediate.
Is it possible to get this caching mechanism to ignore certain variables? Sorry for this trouble, but admittedly, we haven't come across an issue like this before!
Thank you for your kind response, I realize it's not a very common problem :) I'm currently looking into the possibility to tweak the caching system but I haven't found a solution there yet. If you hear of anything that might help I'd be glad to hear it too!
Hi Mark, I think you're on the money with tweaking the caching system, but our dev team did come back with two suggestions:
1. make the campiagn name shorter - that's used in two of the parameters
2. to shorten up the utm_term, they can define a title tag on the links <a href="" title=""> - if they make it empty or whitespace we'll probably end up using something else, but they can experiment and find a short dummy value there that will work for them.
