I am playing around with the facebook like feature which is really good. However I was wondering if there are any configurable options that allow you change what is displayed on facebook. Ideally the image and the text submitted. I only ask as a few tests I have done bring back the text of the first article in our email but the wrong image.
I would also like to know if it's possible to change the image when liking a campaign to facebook. We're using multiple images in the campaign - but it takes a random one it seems.
Hi Daz and Wouter, it is possible to manually set the image, title, description and more using Facebook's Open Graph protocol. Here's an early draft of an upcoming blog topic on customizing how subscribers Like your email campaign. Let me know if you have any questions about this and good luck! :)
It used to be that Facebook would see the different images uploaded to the campaigns, and allow people to choose one of the images when they liked a campaign, now it's only a "Like" option that picks an image randomly. Our clients *really* want the old functionality back, where people could choose which image from the campaign got shared. Any way to get that back, since there's no way to specify multiple image options with FB's Open Graph protocol, and no way to use an client-uploaded image in the meta tags anyways?
I expect the og:image solution for this only works with images hosted on one's own server, assuming the image can't be uploaded with the template and be expected to be given a properly referenced place on CM's server, right?
@peterbaker - Have you tried defining og:image in your email campaign? Sorry about the late response here.
@PMcKern - Yes, you need to upload the image defined in og:image on your own server. We don't 'officially' support Open Graph in campaigns yet, so the app won't automatically update the og:image tag to point to an image on our servers. Hope that helps!
@roshodgekiss - Yes, I get how og:image works, but that's missing my point; There's no way to customize og:image on a per-campaign basis, only in the template. I can't enable my clients to specify which image gets used for each campaign, nor does Facebook see images from within the template anymore.
Example; a liquor company sends out a newsletter with a selection of drink recipes, they want people who share the campaign on Facebook to choose the image of the recipe they like most when sharing. This used to be possible, it's not anymore. Without specifying og:image, Facebook simply grabs the first image it comes across, if we do specify og:image on the template level, it won't be any of the uploaded images in the campaign.
This has been extremely hard to explain to our clients, since it did previously work exactly as they expected (and exactly how it works on most websites).
Hi peterbaker, thank you for clarifying. I'm happy to add this as a feature request for you internally, as it's something we'd consider more formally supporting in the future. It's certainly a shame that Facebook have made changes on their end, so we'd be keen to investigate viable workarounds.
