Can't make changes to custom field

I"m trying to make changes to an existing multi-option custom field. When I try to "save changes" I get the following error message:

Sorry, we couldn't add your custom field because...
The Personalization Tag is already in use, and must be unique

Which is odd, because I'm just trying to edit the field, not create a new one.

I get this error message regardless of whether I make changes to the field or even just try to save it without making a single change.
